Youth Activities Committee Report

In the past year at Ascension we have been blessed with the young children and youth at our church. We have had a multitude of activities over the year.  In the spring, the youth went camping and worked on preparing a skit that they performed for the church. The blessing of the animals brought many families out with their beloved pets. In the fall, the children dressed up in their Halloween costumes to sing for the local nursing home residents. The singing cheered up the spirits of the nursing home residents. The Youth had a lock-in immediately following the Chili Cook-off.  There were nine youth in attendance. We did a mixture of activities ranging from games to movies to discussions on what the youth group would like to do for service and fun activities.  At Christmas time, the children did a wonderful job of singing at the Christmas Fiesta. In addition, the youth group had a good time bowling in December.

In the fall, we started holding a family game night on the second Friday of every month. Participants bring their favorite games from home and we provide a meal. We are planning to keep the family game night going every month. All of the game nights to date have been held at the church, but we are planning to rotate it among different parishioner’s homes. The next scheduled family game night is on February 13 at 6:30 pm. Pastor Brian is sponsoring this family game night at his home.

On Super-Bowl Sunday (February 1st), the youth of Ascension join other youth across the country for the “Souper Bowl of Caring” to help fight hunger. The youth will be collecting your donations after the service on Sunday, February 1.  Proceeds will go to the ELCA World Hunger Appeal.

The youth are currently in the process of renovating the youth room, which will include repainting the walls.  The painting is currently scheduled for January 31st.  If you have any of the following supplies please contact Kelly Condon or Janet Constantine: bulletin boards, paint, electronic equipment, posters, pillows, rugs, plants, and couch slipcovers (neutral color). Thanks for any support that you can provide.

We will be planning other events in the coming year. If you have any ideas on youth activities that you would like to see at Ascension feel free to bring us any suggestions that you have. The youth committee recently met at Kelly Condon’s home on January 24th.  If you are interested in helping to plan and participate in youth activities, please join our committee. We look forward to planning events to bring together the youth in the congregation.

Respectfully submitted,

Scott Johnson and Kelly Condon
