Project Activity

#1 Gather ingredients and equipment before starting the recipe. For equipment you will need: measuring spoons, dry and liquid measuring cups, large bowl, saucepan, mixing spoon.

#2 To make popcorn balls you will need:

2/3 cup (0.16 L) light corn syrup 2 cups (0.5 L) sugar

2/3 cups (0.16 L) water

2 teaspoon (10 mL) cream of tartar

2 tablespoons (30 mL) vinegar

1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) baking soda

2 tablespoons (30 mL) butter

1 teaspoon (5 mL) vanilla

Combine corn syrup, sugar, water, cream of tartar, and vinegar in a large saucepan. Cook until boiling. Mixture should form a ball when a small amount is dropped in cold water.

Add baking soda and butter.

Stir until the mixture stops foaming, then add vanilla.

Pour over popcorn.

Mix well and make into balls.

Caution: Remember, this mixture will be hot.

#3 Wrap popcorn balls in clear plastic wrap and tie with a ribbon to hang on the Christmas tree or to give as gifts.

#4 Unwrapped or stale popcorn balls can be hung outside as a treat for the birds.
