Hot Cross Buns

A tasty ancient worship tradition for Good Friday.
  Ages: All
  Topic : Lent/Easter
  Bible: Mark 15:20; John 3:16, 17

  Food-n-Faith Focus
A long time ago making sweetened cakes to celebrate the coming of spring was
practiced by pagan people. When these people converted to Christianity they
put crosses on their cakes as a way of worshiping God. We now make them in
remembrance of Christ's sacrifice on the cross.
  Materials
     • One can of ready-to-bake cinnamon rolls with frosting
  Food-n-Faith Activity
  1. Since these rolls always seem to taste best when they are fresh from the
oven, gather your family together to make the rolls.
  2. Follow package directions for baking the cinnamon rolls.
  3. While the rolls are baking, say to your family, "A long time ago people who
didn't know about Christ worshiped nature. They made sweetened cakes to
celebrate the coming of spring. When the good news of Jesus reached them, they
decided to change their tradition from worshiping the earth to worshiping
Christ. They baked their cakes on Good Friday, putting crosses on each one as
a reminder of Christ's sacrifice on the cross."
  4. Read the following verses as you wait for the rolls to cool.
Pilate set Barabbas free. Then he ordered his soldiers to beat Jesus with a
whip and nail him to a cross.
    Matthew 27:26
When the soldiers had finished making fun of Jesus, they took off the purple
robe. They put his own clothes back on him and led him off to be nailed to a
    cross.
    Mark 15:20
A Roman army officer was standing in front of Jesus. When the officer saw
how Jesus died, he said, "This man really was the Son of God!"
    Mark 15:39
God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so
that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really
die. God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent
    him to save them!
    John 3:16-17
But God showed how much he loved us by having Christ die for us, even though
    we were sinful.
    Romans 5:8
  5. Place frosting in the form of a cross on each of the rolls once they are
  cooled.
  6. Before eating, pray, "Thank you God for dying for us on the cross on Good
Friday. Give us the power to live each new day as forgiven followers of Jesus
Christ. We want him to be Lord of our lives! Amen"
