BOOK CLUB

Out of Africa by Isak Dinesen

The Book Club is meeting on Saturdays at Russell's* at 10am.  We are now  reading Isak Dinesen’s classic Out of Africa*.   Everyone is welcome!

From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. First published in 1937, Out of Africa is not free of the colonial or racist attitudes of its time; yet, within that context, Isak Dinesen is an enlightened observer and participant as she describes the experience of British East Africa before World War II. She portrays in rich detail the vast land around her, alive with strange and wonderful human populations; the thrilling terror of a nocturnal lion hunt; a shooting accident among the Africans on her farm and its repercussions; raising and freeing an orphaned antelope fawn; getting to know the Africans and the colonial adventurers who found their way into her life.

WORLD HUNGER

2007

ELCA World Hunger

Hunger Coin Bank"Living Simply With God: A 40-Day Hunger Calendar"* shows how you can live a joyous and abundant life, filled with generosity towards others. It works well with families with children and offers people of all ages opportunities to pray, discuss, read, count, write, and give money to help hungry people around the world.

Collection boxes for World Hunger are available in the narthex.  Please take one home to put your spare change (or perhaps bills!) in.  Many people throughout the world need us to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.  The boxes will be gathered up on Reformation Sunday, October 28th.

HELP WANTED

Help Wanted

Proof reader needed for our church web site.  Do you visit our web site often?  Notice typos or bad links now and again?  Let the web steward know.  It is sometimes impossible to see one's own errors. He needs and would welcome an assistant to proof and read the site. The pay is great satisfaction in helping make our web site an accurate picture of our ministry at Ascension.  Contact pastor or Tom Clark if you’d like to help.

Thrivent for Lutherans

Look around the church property and you will see that it has undergone a thorough cleaning.  A landscaping crew was hired to complete the job, but help is needed to maintain it.  The floors in the PLC were also cleaned and rewaxed. This type of maintenance would have amounted to a considerable expense, but through the generosity of Thrivent for Lutherans* the $1,100 expense has been covered. Our thanks to Thrivent!

THE LUNCH BUNCH

after church Sundays

The Evangelism/Stewardship Team is looking for individuals interested in going out to lunch after Sunday worship. In sharing Sunday dinner together, we hope to keep connected with each other, include others in our fellowship and share our favorite restaurants with one another. We also hope it will be a way for visitors to Ascension to feel welcomed. Sign up for the "Lunch Bunch" in the narthex today!

The altar flower chart is now on the bulletin board in the narthex and has open Sundays available.  Some of us have received bills from Freytag’s that include a delivery charge. This is a mistake, and if you received such a bill simply subtract the delivery charge when you submit payment. Also, sales tax does apply to these arrangements.
