WELCOME The Ascension Sanctuary
THE APOSTLES' CREED
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
and born of the virgin Mary.
He suffered under Pontius Pilate.
was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen
The Apostles’ Creed – At the heart of our understanding of the faith is the Apostles’ Creed. Although it is attributed to the apostles, it does not come to us directly from them. The word “creed” is taken from the Latin phrase credo, which means, “I believe”. Something like the Apostles’ Creed was used very early in the church, perhaps as early as 200 AD when new Christians were baptized. Although not literally from the Scriptures, it reflects the biblical faith in simple, but profound words. For example, in his explanation to the third part of the creed, Martin Luther writes, “I believe that I cannot by my own effort or ability believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him. But the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts and sanctified and kept me in the true faith.” Apart from God, we can do nothing!
